Tutorial
State of Decay 2 is incredibly system heavy. If you are brand new to the franchise, we highly recommend starting your first playthrough with the tutorial. It’ll give you a rundown of combat, scavenging, character inventory, and blood plague, enabling you to survive your first few days in your apocalypse. Don’t worry, the tutorial is short and sweet, designed to set you up for success (and keep you alive).
Choosing Your Starting Characters
The first thing you’ll do in the tutorial is choose your starting characters. You will be able to pick between 4 different pairs of survivors with their own skills and stories. Your choice will carry on into the main gameplay after the tutorial ends.
Your First Base
Upon completing the tutorial, you’ll be taken to home base in the Providence Ridge map, known as Firewatch Fortress. For more information on bases click here.
Pop-Ups & 3-Panel Tutorials
As a new or returning player, you’ll receive pop-ups and 3 panel tutorials to guide you through the game. This is to help you stay on top of the changing gameplay and challenges throughout. You’ll also be guided with orange “!” in various menus and items to help with the current missions. If you miss a pop-up or need a refresher, these tutorial tips can all be found by hitting the pause button, and navigating to the “How to Play” tab.
You will be led through missions that teach the basics of the game such as:
– Curing the Plague
– Repairing and Refueling Vehicles
– Gathering Resources
– Claiming an Outpost
– Defeating an Infestation
– Interacting with Enclaves
– Fighting the Plague Hearts
– Choosing a Leader
– Moving to a New Base
These missions occur mostly in this order, with some deviation based on player choices. The 3-panel pop ups will appear throughout these early missions to help guide you.
If at any point you want to turn these off, for example after your first playthrough and you know what you’re doing, you can do so in the settings menu.
Your First Mission
Your very first mission after the tutorial will be to save your partner from the blood plague they contracted during the tutorial. Simply follow the community suggestions and head out to kill and collect plague samples from plague zombies (the red guys). Make sure to bring medical supplies and good weapons since you will be fighting zombies right off the bat. If you don’t have any on you, check your other survivors’ inventory or the Supply Locker.
After you collect the needed blood plague samples, the on-screen tips and tutorials will walk you through creating your first cure and administering it to your partner. Note: you do have other options other than curing a community member. You can learn more about surviving the blood plague here.
